Dr. Hoffman was ordained as a rabbi in 1969, received his PhD in 1973 and has taught since then at Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York as the Barbara and Stephen Friedman Professor of Liturgy, Worship and Ritual. He is an internationally known author and lecturer.
