Welcome Week was a Great Success

Welcome Week 2008 saw the most successful new student programming for Hillel at Temple University in recent history. For the first time, Hillel was a full partner with the University and our events were included in their printed and online materials.  Approximately, 200 new Jewish students were welcomed around campus including well over 100 at our Chinese-themed freshman Shabbat dinner and services. We were extremely pleased to see another 60 freshman the following day for our “Chill Hour” event where we played board games, ate nachos, and held havdallah services. The excitement from Welcome Week culminated when our opening BBQ attracted over 130 Jewish students and put Hillel in the forefront of everyone’s minds.

Even after the completion of Welcome Week, the energy has remained on campus. We have seen continued growth in Shabbat, as was evident from our annual “Welcome Back Shabbat” which packed our building with 90 Jewish students. Due to the overwhelming increase in Hillel participants this year, and the extreme desire of many students to become Jewish leaders on campus, we have opened up 20 new leadership positions on our recently created ‘general board’. We hope that these new positions will attract even more Jewish students to Hillel and will continue to feed the momentum that has built up over the past few months.
